Wedding Table Fixtures

A customer came to me requesting printing services for a bulk order. These pieces combine to form centerpiece light fixtures for tables at an upcoming wedding. Another lens mounts between the printed parts (pictures coming soon) to complete the assembly.

After printing, the primary concern for these parts wasn’t finished surface quality; the customer is going to prime and paint these to reach the desired finish. Rather than surface quality, tolerances of the interfacing edges was the top priority for these prints, which changed the production strategy in a couple ways.

The pieces that share a likeness with widened chess pieces (the bottom three parts in the image at the right) were printed in the orientation shown. Because of the overhang of the top surface, supports were necessary. These supports were formed from the filleted edge below, leaving an uneven finish. To smooth this out, a wide soldering iron tip was used to melt the plastic down. This isn’t an approach I would normally take, but it was agreed with the customer that this method was ideal for these parts in particular, due to the final processing that was already planned.
